- The mouse and the Doves *
- *
- A mouse was sitting on the ground and -
- hungrily nibbling at some seeds. Above-
- a hawk was perched in a banyan tree -
- watching and waiting. *
- *
- A flock of doves appeared like a cloud-
- in the blue sky. They too, were -
- searching for food. The king of doves -
- was leading the way. He had sharp -
- eyes. He saw his old enemy, the hawk, -
- hunched in the banyan tree. *
- *
- There was little danger that the hawk -
- would attack a whole flock of doves -
- but he realised that the mouse was in -
- danger. *
- *
- The hawk swooped. The mouse froze in -
- fear. *
- "Follow me," the dove-king called to -
- the other doves. The flock changed -
- course and swerved towards the mouse. *
- *
- This gave the mouse time to move and -
- he scuttled under a rock. *
- *
- The hawk had not caught his prey. *
- "The mouse is safe for the time -
- being," the dove-king said. The doves -
- flew on and continued in their search -
- for food. *
- *
- After a while the youngest dove -
- complained to the king-dove: *
- "I'm so tired and hungry. I can't fly -
- much further." *
- The dove-king spoke to the little dove-
- soothingly and managed to persuade him-
- to fly a little bit further. *
- *
- Presently, he spotted some rice -
- scattered beneath a big tree. *
- "This way," cooed the dove-king, and -
- all the doves settled to eat the rice.*
- *
- But it was a trap! Suddenly a heavy -
- net fell from the tree upon the entire-
- flock. The doves flapped furiously and-
- in great fear but they could not -
- escape from the heavy coiling of the -
- net. *
- *
- A huge grinning farmer came striding -
- towards them. The doves flapped harder-
- but it was of no use. *
- "We shall die," said one little dove. *
- They all cried, "What can we do to -
- save ourselves?" *
- The farmer was getting closer and -
- there was little time to spare. *
- "Be still everyone and listen to me," -
- commanded the dove-king. "If we all -
- move together we can act like one -
- giant dove. We may be able to lift -
- this net. At a signal from me, *
- "hold the net in your beak and flap -
- your wings together as if you were a -
- giant bird." *
- *
- Each dove took hold of the net in its -
- beak and waited for the signal from -
- the dove-king. *
- "Now," cried the dove-king. *
- *
- The farmer watched in amazement as the-
- net began to lift slowly. *
- "Is this magic?" he thought. *
- The net rose right over his head and -
- up into the sky. *
- The farmer suddenly realised what was -
- happening. He shouted at the doves and-
- waved his club at them. Then he gave -
- chase, hoping that the doves would -
- drop the net. *
- *
- The doves flew on until the farmer was-
- left far behind. They flew over the -
- hills towards the setting sun. *
- One of the little doves began to droop-
- and said, "I'm too tired to fly any -
- further." *
- "So am I," murmured some of the other -
- doves. *
- "How shall we escape from this net?" *
- Some of the doves tried letting go of -
- the net but the heavy strands caught -
- them, and became heavier for the other-
- doves. *
- "Don't give up yet?" pleaded the -
- dove-king. "I know someone who will -
- help us." *
- *
- The dove-king steered the flock back -
- to where they had seen the mouse and -
- the hawk earlier. The hawk was no -
- longer there. The dove-king searched -
- for a sign of the mouse. *
- "I hope that the mouse has not gone -
- far," thought the dove-king. *
- Slowly the dove-king steered the flock-
- to the ground. *
- *
- The mouse was nestling amongst some -
- rocks and thinking about how he had -
- nearly been caught. The doves had -
- saved his life. *
- He looked up when he saw a dark shadow-
- in the sky getting nearer. He was a -
- little afraid. There was a flapping of-
- wings and then a heavy thud. *
- A voice called out softly, "Don't be -
- afraid. Remember us! This morning we -
- saved you from the hawk." *
- *
- Cautiously the mouse peeped out. He *
- was surprized to see the doves caught -
- up in the heavy coils of a net. *
- "Will you help us? We cannot get free -
- of the net. Please help us." *
- "I would like to help you," said the -
- mouse. "But what can I do. I am not -
- strong enough to lift the heavy net" *
- "The net is made from rope and you -
- have good strong teeth. Will you gnaw -
- the rope so that we can get free. We -
- will die if you do not." *
- The mouse took hold of the strand and *
- began to gnaw the net. He gnawed and -
- gnawed. The rope was tough and his -
- jaws began to ache. But he continued -
- gnawing because he was determined to -
- do everything to save the doves. *
- *
- When the mouse had gnawed the first -
- strand he called to the dove-king to -
- come out. *
- "No, " said the dove-king, I will not -
- leave until all the other doves are -
- free. Let the smallest dove out first -
- for he is very tired." *
- *
- So the smallest dove stepped out and -
- flapped his wings. It was wonderful to-
- be free. One by one the doves stepped -
- out of the net. *
- The mouse worked hard to free every -
- dove. He grew very weary. His jaws -
- ached and every bite was painful but -
- he did not stop. He gnawed on. *
- At last the dove-king stepped out. *
- "Thank you very much. You have saved -
- our lives. We shall always be friends.*
- *
- Both the mouse and the doves were -
- exhausted. But they felt at peace -
- because they had helped each other and-
- were both safe. *
- *
- The mouse crawled to the safety of the-
- rocks. The flock of doves flew into -
- the night sky with promises of -
- returning to protect the mouse from -
- the hawk. *
